Guildford and South Surrey Branch

Branch activities

2021

GOOD NEWS is we hope to re-start in person activities from mid-May 2021 onwards for most of our activities.

For people with Parkinson's, socialising, exercise and therapeutic activities are equally important so we aim to provide a mixture of Branch activities. Most Social Activities are free of charge although there may be a charge for tea and coffee, raffles, etc.

We aim to provide these exercise and therapeutic activities ‘at cost’ and often we are able to significantly subsidise them with our Branch funds. Participants may have to pay a small fee per class, either directly to the class provider or to the Branch Treasurer.

Social activities

We have monthly social meetings on the afternoon of the last Tuesday of each month. These social meetings allow you to meet new friends, learn from each other’s experiences and often hear a guest speaker whilst having light refreshments. There are also occasional special events such as maybe a summer outing or a specialist demonstration outside of the normal monthly meetings. We also host a Christmas dinner. More details including any planned guest speakers are on this website under Branch Meetings

Currently we are providing these monthly ‘social meetings’ over Zoom. However, we hope to return to in person meetings from September 2021

For our younger members we have our Working Age Group (WAG’s) that also meets monthly on the third Tuesday at 8.00 p.m. in the back room of the Withies Inn, Compton. These also often have a guest speaker, as well as quizzes and a general chance to meet new friends in a convivial atmosphere. More details are on this website under Working Age Group

Currently we are providing these monthly WAG’s meeting over Zoom, however we plan to return to in person meetings at the Withies from 19th May 2021.

100 Club Fun and Fundraiser

This is a great way for you to support the Branch whilst having a bit of a flutter!

To participate you must be a member of the 100 Club.

Each 100 Club member will be able to buy as many numbers as they wish for £1.00 per number, per month.

Payment for each number must be made in advance.

Once a month, usually at the time of the Branch Monthly Social Meeting, there will be a draw from all the numbers bought by 100 Club members, with 3 numbers drawn winning a cash prize.

If you are interested in joining the new 100 Club, please contact Nick Hetherington at nhetherington@guildfordparkinsons.org.uk

Therapeutic Singing Classes

We provide a weekly singing class through our Parkinsong Choir.

This is led by Emily Bollon, Creative Director of Motivation by Music.

Joining our choir helps you make new connections with other members of the branch, develop breath support for better projection and less strain, use facial muscles to bring about more expression. The choir also release occasional special songs that feature on You Tube to fundraise for the Branch.

You can contact Emily on 07807504738 or email emily@motivationbymusic.com

Therapeutic Dance Classes

We are introducing a weekly in person Dance for Parkinson’s class from Wednesday 26th May 2021 onwards.

This is led by Inclusive Intergenerational Dance (IID). Their website is iid.org.uk

These classes are fully funded for the 2021 by Arts Partnership Surrey as part of Surrey Dance 21, a county wide initiative celebrating dance. Therefore, there is no charge to take part.

The classes will be held at the Borough Hall, Godalming, GU7 1HY. These classes will be socially distanced.

You can contact IID on 07984791402 / 07958774617 or email iidconsortium@gmail.com

Therapeutic Speech Maintenance Classes

We have introduced an online monthly Loud and Clear speech maintenance class.

This is led by Celia Bacon who is a trained speech therapist and her web site can be found at www.vox-humana.net

Currently this monthly class is oversubscribed. To go on the waiting list please contact Niki Tompkinson at ntompkinson@guildfordparkinsons.org.uk

Exercise activities

We have contracts with a small number of providers to offer our members ‘Parkinson’s focussed’ weekly Physiotherapy classes and also specialist Pilates classes. The teachers are highly professional, experienced and friendly - and they offer a range of classes, tailored for individual members at different stages of the condition. Their classes are held at locations hopefully convenient to the majority of members to avoid too much driving.

New members attending the Physiotherapy classes are given an initial assessment by the provider to identify the best level of class to meet their needs, and then there are annual follow up assessments to monitor physical progress. These assessments are a one-to-one review with a NeuroPhysiotherapist.

The Branch has agreed a fee with each provider on a member per class basis. The Branch then pays a subsidy per member to the providers, and members then pay the balance directly to providers. These member payments are made in advance for a ‘block’ of weekly classes, normally 10 weeks or similar.
